How to Inspect for Subterranean Termites:
As you will see, termite inspection is quite a task, so at this point you may want to call your local Dial Us Termite office in Los Angeles County, Orange County or Riverside County.
What you'll need: A long screwdriver and a flashlight.
Go slowly and really take the time to inspect things. Start with the crawl spaces. The presence of swarmers or their shed wings almost always indicates termite activity. A complete inspection would mean locating exposed shelter tubes and damaged wood. Generally speaking, Subterranean termites are found at or close to ground level. However, in warmer climates they will set up colonies in your second floor. Start with the first floor though.
Start your search for termite damage poking and probing the wood in question with your screwdriver. Look closely at the exterior and interior surfaces of the foundation, particularly construction where wood is on or near the soil. Look for mud tubes and the activity of swarmers or swarmers themselves. Closely inpsect all sills, sub floors, joists, support posts, supporting piers, basement window frames, wood under porches. The hot spots for termites to gather are right where wood meets concrete. So follow those areas as far as they go.
As you can see, this is quite task, so at this point you may want to call your local Dial Us Termite office.
